Oxfordshire Area Ramblers

Variety is a key feature of our walks, with something for everyone.

Outside pub

At the heart of our programme are short walks on every Wednesday and longer ones on Sundays. To make the most of summer we enjoy shorter evening walks on Thursdays from May to August.

If you no longer wish to walk far but do wish to make and retain your friends in the group whilst getting some exercise, our lunchtime strolls might be for you. We call these our Easy Friday Lunch Walks, which are on the 1st Friday of each month, starting at 10.30. Afterwards some of us have lunch in a local pub; it’s up to you.

We  also offer short Sunday afternoon strolls on the last Sunday of each month.

In a field

At the other end of the spectrum we have fast-paced walks of around 6 miles in 2 hours on many Saturdays. These ‘Charlton Charge’, Duns Tew Trot‘Adderbury Allegro andDeddington Dash walks start at 10.00.

These fast paced walks have restarted and been augmented by the longer "Heyford Hustle".

You will find details of all our walks by clicking on the link to our ‘walks’ page.

Walk Leaders

Our insurers now require a Risk Assessment to be filled out before each walk. A suitable template can be found on this page of the Ramblers website. The Risk Assessment should be stored by the walk leader for 3 years after the walk.

Our local variants of previous Risk Assessments are not applicable after August 2021. The latest such version is Word file, PDF (until 13 May 2021 Word, PDF).

Walk Leaders Notes

At the start of a walk we ask our walk leaders to point out:

The UK government has confirmed that organised sport and physical activity, which include Ramblers group walks, can resume and are exempt from legal gathering limits. However the general public may not be aware that Ramblers Walks come under this banner, and many people may be dubious seeing us walking in large groups. It is therefore important that we are seen to adhere to other Covid guidelines.

We are aware that many walkers do not wish to book places, maybe days or weeks in advance, so are not using a booking system. Other local Ramblers groups do use booking systems. We wish to avoid massive groups, so if we find large numbers turning up intend to divide into smaller parties at the start point and walk independently. We do still need to register for NHS Track and Trace, and to do this contactlessly encourage  walkers to pre-register by email, even on the day. If you are unable to attend please cancel your registration to avoid being contacted by the NHS in the unlikely event that T&T is invoked.

We assess each walk individually and will subdivide groups into smaller parties when we feel it appropriate to the route. Please let us know if you are put off walking in larger parties and prefer a smaller maximum party size.

Due to COVID-19 we all need to take extra steps to stay safe. This includes physical distancing - 2 metres and using gloves when touching path furniture such as stiles and gates - or hand sanitise before and after doing so, not holding open small gates for others since that would breach the physical distancing, and not facing other people when passing on narrow tracks.
