Thame & Wheatley Events
Thame & Wheatley group AGM, 18 November 2011
By popular request last year’s format for the AGM is being repeated this year. The T&W AGM will be held at
Christchurch, Thame on Friday 18th November at 6:30pm followed by a FISH and CHIP SUPPER (other choices available).
There will also be a talk by Rod Byles on the U3A River Thame Project which has carried out research into the history,
mills, flora, fauna, source etc of the River Thame.
Shorter walks on offer
By popular demand, Bob Ward (01844 339352) is organising short, leisurely walks, 3 to 4 miles, local to
the Thame & Wheatley area. They are to be on the first Tuesday of every month (apart from June
when the walk will be on Wednesday 8th), starting at 10am. Contact Bob for full details.
Get Walking Day 2011

The Thame & Wheatley Ramblers managed to dodge the showers over the weekend and were able to
distribute information about the national work of the Ramblers as well as details of local walks at
their stall in Thame on Saturday. The day got off to a bad start, however, as Air Ambulance set up a
tent to publicise their work and raise funds exactly where we had planned to have our stall - in front
of Thame Town Hall.
Apparently they had applied to SODC for permission to use the space while we had

applied to Thame Town Council - and both had given permission! Our alternative site was in a very
draughty alley so several trips were made to nearby coffee shops to warm ourselves up. On Sunday we,
with walkers new to Ramblers, enjoyed a circular walk from Christchurch, Thame, to Moreton, followed by
coffee and cake in the church hall. Tony Clarke led the 3½ mile walk which included a section on the
Phoenix trail and a tour of Cuttle Brook Nature Reserve.
Day out at Avebury

Fourteen walkers joined the Thame & Wheatley group at the Avebury NT car park for a ten mile walk
round the historic local sites, including Silbury Hill, West Kennet Long Barrow, the Sanctuary and the
Avebury Stone Circle. Bob Ward led the walk, which included the very start of the Ridgeway, and also
provided information about the individual sites. At the end of the walk, we enjoyed tea at the cafe
in the sunshine followed by a trip round the museum.
