THE AREA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Held on January 26th
About 85 members and a few non-members crowded into the village hall at Ewelme and were welcomed by the chairman. Lewis Spiess from the Oxford Fieldpaths Society presented a cheque for £5000 to the RA as a contribution towards the costs of the BMW case. He was warmly thanked and given a big round of applause. A one-minute silence was observed in rememberance of Brian Hodgson the late President who died unexpectantly last year.

Patricia Wright brought up the need for walks using public transport; Pat Lonergan replied that even with car free days there was little take up. The annual report was accepted. Peter Stone said that some groups had opted for a budgeting system for their funding which meant that some of them would get increased funding this year. The accounts were approved with one member dissenting.

Most of the officers were elected unopposed with the exception of the two delegates to general council, after a secret ballot Pat Lonergan and Susan Maguire were selected, Brian Wright coming third. Another ballot was made for the Member Representatives, Hazel Lister and Dominic Pinto being elected with Brian Wright coming third.

Brian Wright then presented a motion to be put forward at General Council. This General Council resolves that the governing documents should be amended so that all members are given the freedom to choose whether to be associate members or company members. After some discussion it was felt that more research needed to be done on the motion and the members agreed to remit it to the next EC meeting.
An interesting talk and film show followed the meeting on the restoration of the watercress beds at Ewelme by the Chiltern Society volunteers. A big vote of thanks must go to the Didcot and Wallingford group who not only organised a great walk in the morning but splendid refreshments in the afternoon.
